You place one UGM into the Research Station with one Stabilozine, hit the button, and bam, you have genes. The process of researching UGM is very straightforward. This step will transform your useless genetic material into useful mutations that you can splice into people (though you might want to hold off until you get stronger genes.) So, you've gathered a bunch of UGM, what now? Well, here comes the fun part: using the Research Station to research your genes. It does not matter if the container is previously opened by another crew member with or without the talent. Scavenger can be used multiple times on the same container by multiple crew with the same talent. This means more UGM can be found in incubation bubbles, and in wreck and outpost containers. When the effect is triggered (25% chance on any container), the loot will be re-generated, allowing more items to potentially spawn. The security officer's Scavenger (2nd Specialisation in the left tree) gives a chance to spawn additional items in containers. There is one more talent that yield more extra UGM, and it is related to spawning more items inside containers. They will appear in the General Merchant's inventory, but are only available to the medic with the talent, so make sure to switch to them if you are playing singleplayer, or give some extra money to the medic in multiplayer - they might return the favour later down the line with some powerful genes. With this talent, it is possible to purchase UGM from cities and research stations. Medic has another talent that can be useful for finding more UGM: Blackmarket Genes. crawlers will not have any increased chance of dropping UGM that researches into crawler genes. The type of genetic material found on corpses is not dependent on the type of creature. Humans do not count as "creatures", so pirates, bandits, outpost npcs, and your crewmates will not yield any genes upon looting them. All creatures now have extra inventory space, and so UGM can be found on any corpses, with the exception of Guardians and Defense Bots (because they are machines). This talent does not stack with multiple medics it only works with the first medic with the talent. Anyone can kill the creature, but only the medic can loot the creature. This talent has been reworked with the 0.20 talent update, and now works differently. It gives a 20% chance to find genetic materials on creatures. Gene harvester is the most notable talent, found in the Medic's Scientist tree. However, some jobs have talents that can increase the amount of UGM you find. There is a small chance (1%) to find some in a wreck or outpost's medical cabinet, and a slightly higher chance (2%) to find them in incubation bubbles, which are found in ruins. UGM is most often looted from ruins and wrecks.
